JUNE UPDATE | Gardeners Blog by our Head Gardener

The first half of this month was disappointing due to be cold weather and strong winds, even the plants sulked. They came back strongly in the latter part of the month as temperature rose, the sun shone and we all basked in the warmer weather. Watering of the planters took precedence, the weeds proliferated – much to the chagrin the of the gardeners.

The two beds of Queen Elizabeth roses surrounded by nepeta (catmint) and planted in memory of her late Majesty, flowered beautifully and were much admired by visitors. Hemerocallis (Day Lily), Digitalis Ambigua (Foxglove) and the water lilies are all making a good show at the moment.

This month the work of volunteer gardener, Bez, is highlighted. Bez is responsible for the greenhouse, propagation, care of the plant nursery area and plant sales. The range and variety of plants at Gwrych Castle has grown considerably over the years giving more opportunities for propagation – some of which have been incorporated into new planting schemes for the Gardens.

Some plants are available for sale outside the Visitor Centre and these are snapped up quickly by visitors to take home as a memento. Donations of planters (especially of terracotta pots) enables the cost to the Castle to be minimized.

Thanks to all of our volunteers who provide photos to illustrate the work carried out in the Gardens, especially Jackie Ford who has worked her magic with a camera!
